Remix Number 2

Orbital Track : Various

Martin LessmeisterRemix Name : Orbital Orbited

Remixer: Martin Lessmeister

Location: New Jersey, USA

Musical Influence:

Electronic music really sparked my interest (by fate) about two years ago. The Future Sound of London was the group which got me onto the bandwagon.Branching from FSOL, I came to know and love artists like AFX, Autechre, and especially Orbital. The collage of sound that electronic music creates defines its originality. I feel this music inspires me and gives me more individuality.

As far as other music, I like lots -- from Beethoven to Pink Floyd. It's pretty cool to listen to someone who has total contral of his instrument. That's why I like to switch over to analog/acoustic every once in a while. :)

Why did you choose this remix:

I didn't choose a particular song to remix. I thought putting together more than one of my favorite songs might be a better representation of this fantastic band. Plus I thought It would be more "exciting."

What style of Orbital do you wish to hear in the future:

I can't really say. Just that they should be as creative as they always have been, and that they should follow themselves -- not necessarily the rest of the industry. And it would be nice to hear some live Orbital in a town near me. My friends and I would jump to the occasion!

Favourite Tracks:

Of what I own, my favorites are (in no particular order): Halcyon (live),Lush 3, Speed Freak, Chime (live), The Box EP, Sad But True, and Out There Somewhere?

Equipment/Software Used:

A couple hundred megs free hard drive space... Soundforge 4.0 and all its useful tools, Vienna 2.1 for sample manipulation. And to avoid sounding too machine produced, I resorted to my brain to add some natural imperfections ;)

Remix Number 3

Orbital Track : P.E.T.R.O.L

MOYRemix Name : P.E.T.R.O.L (Mid-Tempo Mix)

Remixer: MOY

Location: Malaysia

Musical Influence:

B.T (Brian Transeu) Tim Simenon (Bugger pow..wer duster) Other commercial acts like Prodigy, BTG,Chemmies....

Why did you choose this remix:

I chose petrol cause it the easiest to remix .I don't have a Korg Prophecy like they(Hartnolls)do.

What style of Orbital do you wish to hear in the future:

I wish Orbital will continue with what they are doing at the moment cause when they tried to change thier sound they sounded bad (Snivilisation).

Favourite Tracks:

The Box ,The Girl With The Sun In Her Head ,Remind. All my fave tracks.

Remix Number 4

Orbital Track : Midnight

NikoRemix Name : Midnight (Unitary Techsteppin' Mix)

Remixer: Niko Tzoukmanis

Location: Germany

Musical Influence:

Mike Oldfield (very early influence) The Human League (since about 1986) Some early House music. Baby Ford. The Orb, 808 State, The KLF (mainly their ambient records) and Orbital (since about 1991). Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen. John Beltran. Ifach, Trelik, Pure Plastic. Ferox. Mosaic.

Why did you choose this remix:

Actually wanted to remix 'Sunday' or 'Choice', but achieved no satisfying results. Played the 'Midnight' chord sequence just for fun then, and then had the idea what rhythm to use. Spontaneous choice !

What style of Orbital do you wish to hear in the future:

'Brown' Orbital, i.e. the more rhythmic, abstract sound.

Favourite Tracks:

'Forever', 'Impact', 'Lush 3 (Euro Tunnel Disaster 94)/Walk about', 'Desert Storm', 'Sad but true'

Equipment/Software Used:

I just use a digital Roland XP-50 workstation with two expansion boards, and the flowing sound comes from the effect sequence, which offers 40 different effects (several delay, distortion, overdrive, flanger... effects). The problem is that I can only use one effect at one time, the new XP-80 allows to use different effects for different tracks. By the way, I used the phaser effect with quite a long rate, hence the dynamical sound. I'm mostly using my own sounds (especially the basslines), or change preset sounds in a way that I can change their 'colour' in realtime. My dream would be to use a Roland JD-800, which offers great possibilities to change the sound while playing, just like those good old analogue synths.

Why did you choose this remix:

I actually just had the samples from the beginning of the song (woman's voice, and drums) sitting around on my hard drive, I was working on something completely different (non-orbital ;), and saw those samples, and they fit perfectly with what I was already doing, so it turned into a Times Fly mix. :)

Remix Number 10

Orbital Track : Event Horizon

JenuynFaykRemix Name : Hull Breach Mix

Remixer: Scott Reeves

Location: Redhill, UK

Musical Influence:

Umm, I guess I'm influenced in mixing by most mixers around today, but most of my inspiration comes from listening to the classic movie composers like John Barry, James Horner (whos music I used for the intro to my mix), Danny Elfman and alike. To me, music is a visual medium, whether its supported by images on a screen or by what you can conjure up in your own mind. Other influences would come from synth musicians like Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Mark Shreeve.

Why did you choose this remix:

Well, I've been following both Kamen and Orbital for years.. How could I pass up a chance to mix such a great collaboration between one of fave movie composers and two of my fave composers, period.

What style of Orbital do you wish to hear in the future:

I'd like to see them do more movie stuff, but then *I* would. What I'd really like to hear would be them both working with an orchestra, nothing heavy but just to see what they could do. I really liked what they did with some of the cues in Event Horizon, I'd just like to see them expand of what they begun.

Favourite Tracks:

I guess the Box pt2 and Halcyon.

Equipment/Software Used:

Just a wav editor (Sound Forge) and some plugins

Remix Number 14

Orbital Track : Out There Somewhere

PoCRemix Name : Mobeus Mix

Remixer: Mobeus (http://mobeus.base.org)

Location: Blackpool, UK

Musical Influence:

Martin : Kraftwerk, 80's electronica and of course Orbital ;)

Pascal : Electronica

Why did you choose this remix:

Martin : Really like the track and wanted to do something not everyone else would have a go at. Wanted something with a challenge, and it was *believe me*

What style of Orbital do you wish to hear in the future:

Martin : "Orbital style", you've got to remember these guys are probably the most unique band in the UK. They don't fit into any pidgeonholes, they are Orbital, they're the only 'underground' act to chart top 10 and still keep every bit of credability. Whatever Orbital release next I'm sure will be well worth listening to.

Favourite Tracks:

Martin : I would have said Out there somewhere, but I think I've heard it enough for a lifetime now. I think I'm going for Adan's or Lush 3.x ;)

Pascal : Tracks from the green album...Fahrenheit 303

Equipment/Software Used:

Full List

We've recently got a PC system with the idea of hard-disk recording, however he Orbital remix was our first chance to use it. Previously we'd just been using the PC for remastering and for MIDI sequencing. First thing we did was to digitally transfer the track from In-Sides to the Hard Disk. We then loaded it up into Soundforge and picked off 16bar loops, which we re-processed with Phaser/Flange/Wah-wah/ and loaded into Cubase Audio's sound pool. We had intended to use more of the original track however the original tempo (130bpm) seemed to drift about 6mins into the track, so we just used samples from the first 6mins. After building a basic arrangment we set about writing our remix on the seqencer, sussing out the chord progressions etc. Our 'extra' tracks were recorded and digitally mixed with the original Orbital samples and burned to CD. I also used Timestreching to slightly increase the tempo on another version of the track. The amazing thing was that original Orbital samples never left the digital domain !
